Como podemos leer en Why Lpod, su existencia se justifica sencillamente por la presencia constante en nuestra vida de este sencillo, pero espectacular cuerpo celeste, y como no, a la voluntad de unos pocos admiradores y buenos conocedores de la Luna. Todo empezó en un grupo de Yahoo publicando cada día de diciembre en 2003 una espectacular foto y Lpod nace en enero de 2004.
Como su nombre indica, cada día publica una foto de la Luna. La fuente de las fotos son los aficionados a la fotografía lunar que están repartidos por todo el mundo. Cabe todo, y como siempre los humanos haciendo uso de nuestra inteligencia, imaginación e ingenio tenemos visiones muy distintas de lo mismo.
Es la segunda vez que nuestro www.aristarco.org tiene el honor de que se publique una foto suya. Se trata de una foto geológica, es una foto hecha con filtros RGB y tratada para mostrar la Luna en color y no en tonalidades de gris. Con ello se resaltan diferencias de color provocadas directamente por diferencias de materiales.
Curioso, muy curioso para mi, poder hacer este tipo de análisis con esta foto. Os pego el comentario en inglés que publicó Lpod con la foto

The Moon has very subtle colors, but we don't have to display them that way. Francisco used hard enhancing of the his three color image to display variations in the Moon's composition. The main difference is between the iron-poor highlands in pinkish-red and the iron-rich, bluish mare lavas. The fact that not all mare lavas are the same is obvious - look at the orange colors in eastern Imbrium, Sinus Iridum, part of the floor of Plato, and Mare Frigoris. These orange lavas have less titanium than the bluer ones in western Imbrium, Procellarum, Tranquilitatis and other places. It is remarkable that amateurs can capture images that dramatically demonstrate one of the most salient facts of lunar chemistry.

That is a beautiful coloration of chemistry! It almost looks 3D and really shows the variations in the lava very well.
It is interesting that the coloration of the ejecta from Copernicus and Kepler's rays seem to change to the north across the Imbrium lava, but not to the south. They look more yellowish and orange in the north than the more widespread pink in other direction. Wonder why that would be? Secondaries mixing with different lava?
Rumker is a nice red island there in the green/blue mare too. Great work Francisco!
